The Pregnant Man

What is so surprising about this issue? Is it that he is a man is giving birth to a baby? Is it that he is man who was originally a woman? Is it that he publicizes the fact that he is a pregnant man? Thomas Beatie was born biologically a female, by the name of Tracy Lagondino and had sex change and is now legally a male. When his wife, Nancy, was unable to have kids, Thomas, who still has female organs, had decided he would carry their baby himself. And therefore became the world’s first pregnant man; he is expecting a baby girl in July. But this process, unsurprisingly, has not been so easy for him. “A transgender man can be pregnant because he has the same organs as a woman,” Dr Masterson said. Dr Masterson also said that transgender men face special health risks resulting from their sex change. “It’s really important that he doesn’t take any testosterone early on in the pregnancy and later on, That can cause male-type characteristics in the female baby.” Some of the Beaties’ neighbors are skeptical about the pregnancy. One neighbor said, “I couldn’t say that he looks pregnant. I can stick my stomach out and almost make it look like that. I think it’s kind of bizarre. I don’t know if I believe it or not.” But it was confirmed with Thomas Beatie’s doctor that he was legitimately pregnant. A good question to ask is should this be accepted in society? If so, Why should it be questioned by society? He is a legitimate male who is having a baby. What is mainly strange for us is that it is normally not traditional for a male to be having a baby. But, Thomas Beatie has all the right to express and display that he has a baby. As society, we may think anything we want, but regardless he is legal right to have a baby. The idea that he has told people about him being pregnant shows so much bravery. He is the one giving birth in his family and that is something that has made his wife proud and people in this world should respect the fact that they as a family have made a decision for the father to be pregnant.
Another important issue is to wonder about the welfare of the baby girl that will be coming from the father, It is said by doctors that the baby is in good condition and is making good progress. But, what about when she starts to attend school and she is made fun of for having a father who had been previously a woman. This could cause physiological and social problems for the child.
At this time, I believe the greatest thing that this family could receive is society encouragement and support. It is so important that they have support not only from their family, but also from their close friends and neighbors. It is ok to disagree with the idea of a pregnant man, but the respect for their family should be given without hesitation.

Hey Ariel!

I really liked your blog post, and you make many strong points. To answer some of your questions, I think society does not need to accept or be against Mr. Beatie being pregnant. Like I have said in class before, if his pregnancy is not hurting me, I could care less what he does. His carrying a child and giving birth is his own business, and I personally would not be (and nor should society) be against him bringing in a child into the world. I am sure when the kid grows up, it will be awkward, but I don't see why society would have to be against him and what he is doing.

Hi Ariel!
This was a really interesting blog. I don't know how I feel about it. It is kind of strange that he is having the baby. I hadn't even thought about t he psychological effects it would have on the baby up until now.

Wow.
I heard about this too a few days ago, and I think he may have gone on Oprah possibly? He is obviously not afraid or ashamed o0f this if he is making this a public thing, and with that, the society should recognize his courage and help him out the whole way. Then, once the birth happens, people shouldn't make a sense, or feel bad about it. For all we know, without being told, the child doesn't need to know about this, and never will unless the parents decide to do so.

Great blog, Ariel.

Ariel,

This was a really interesting blog. I feel very bad for that man, beacuse I am sure he gets a lot of negative responses to his situation. I definately think that the idea should be accepted into society. Everybody has the right to do as they please. Obviously this is not going to happen, but I think that it would be nice if everybody could accept the situation. As you mentioned, it is very hard on the man and his wife (and will be for his daughter to be). This is going to make me sound weird, but I really like discovery health channel, and there are some shows about people getting sex changes. The majority (if not all of the people) who go through sex changes are unhappy with themselves and the body that G-d gave them, so they have a hard time in life to begin with. I can just imagine the extra weight that this puts on him. (no pun intended).

hey ariel!
i am so happy that u wrote a blog about this topic, because it really is a conflicting issue in todays society. although some think that this man should be seen as equal to everyone else, i beleive that it is terrible what the man is doing to his future daughter. i think that people can do as they please to thieir bodies, but it is another thing when someone else's life will be ridiculed forever
